Top Ten Tuesday: Books You Thought You Would Like MORE/LESS

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Less

1. Daughter of Smoke and Bone

I owned this book for probably six months before I picked it up and read it. In all fairness I bought the book because of the beautiful cover, but when the book is on my bookshelf you only see the spine and the title just didn’t appeal that much to me. However once I broke down and actually read the book I immediately fell in love. Like couldn’t put it down read it in like 36 hours love. If you haven’t read this one put it to the top of your list. You won’t regret it.

2. Will Grayson, Will Grayson

I’m not going to lie when I first saw this book in store it had no appeal to me whatsoever. I thought it was about two boys with the same name who fell in love and that story didn’t appeal to me (not because I don’t support the man love because I totally do!). However once I started reading reviews I got more and more intrigued and when I finally picked the book up I could not put it back down. Very good story. Very likeable, relatable characters.

3. Beautiful Disaster

This was another one that had me apprehensive. I saw the GoodReads reviews and they had me afraid to read the book because I thought Travis was going to beat the crap out of Abby and I just couldn’t deal with that, but once I read the official reviews the curiosity in me won out. This book is a page turner. I just had to know what happened to Abby and Travis, will they, won’t they? Just tell me!

4. Savages

I bought Savages because I wanted to see the movie and I’m one of those people who have to read the book before they see the movie. I can’t do it the other way around. For some reason if I know what’s going to happen in the book it won’t keep my attention. Anyway, this story isn’t something I usually read so I kind of steered clear of it for a while and read some other things I had first. When I started it, because I ran out of other things to read, I was mad it had taken me so long. The story is intense and interesting. I love how the POV changes in every chapter. It’s a unique telling of a process I was not very familiar with.

5. Dare Me

Who would have thought that a book about cheerleaders could be so engaging? This is another book I bought because of the cover. I started it and loved it immediately. The style is irresistible and I just had to know what was going to happen. I don’t want to say too much because there are a lot of twists and I don’t want to give anything away. But this is a must read.

More

1. Name of the Star

I thought this book was going to be so good. A book about a girl who somehow get entangled with a Jack the Ripper copy cat murderer? That sounds awesome! It wasn’t. It wasn’t bad but it’s not my favorite book I have read this year. The plot drags and the main character brings up random things about her life in Louisiana that don’t seem relevant. It has a good story buried underneath all the fat it just needs trimmed up.

2. Gone Girl

The way everyone raved about this book you would have thought it was the second coming. I bought the book and dove in immediately expecting to be blown away. I really liked the plot and I really like twists. I would definitely read something else by Gillian Flynn because I like her style of writing. But I HATED Real Amy and it really ruined the book for me. She was a freak and I just could not get past it….

3. Dramarama

A book about theatre camp? Yes please! No. Bad characters, no growth. Slow plot. I would not recommend to anyone.

4. Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me

Let me preface this by saying I love Chelsea Handler. I think she’s hilarious and I’ve read almost all of her books. I was really excited to read about her from the POV of the people she interacts with on a daily basis. Find out how she really is. It was boring. Bad writing and not very good stories. I think I’ll stick with Miss Handler.

5. Matched

This book has been a blogging dandy. I was really excited to read it and see what all the fuss was about. I really enjoyed the beginning and thought the author did a great job of setting the scene but I just thought the book felt long. Not enough happened in it to keep my attention. There were a lot of good things and great characters but I felt the story lacked focus.

  1. I also unexpectedly loved (loooooved!!) Daughter of Smoke and Bones.
And I wonder about Chelsea Handler's books,is she as funny in writing as she is "live"?

    1. I am super excited to read the second one. I have it but I just haven't gotten to it yet! As for Chelsea Handler's books... I think they're just as funny as she is live. She writes like she talks so they're a little raunchy, but very funny.
